How to update GNU/Linux through CLI??:)

Hello,

Unofrtunately I think my GNU/Linux barebones system needs a little update but I have never had to update it before.

Can someone please easily explain how to update the system? Thank you so much. You are a beast if you can answer this within ten minutes.

What distro are you using?

The iso that the last I.T. guy used to install and get this system up and running is labeled:
ubuntu-12.04-server-amd64.iso

Connect to the Internet.
Input (1 at a time):
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

so....that didnt work. it says: command not found. I typed in exactly what you typed. I just thought this would help me out on the problems I am currently having with our website on the linux server not responding Link is below if you care to take a look.

I am sorry. Maybe I got the distro wrong, but when I rebooted the linux machine I saw this at the top:
CentOS realease 4.3 (final)
kernel 2.6.9-78.0.13.EL on an i686

Centos 4.3 is a bit old.

Connect to the Internet. Try the command: yum update
