debian live version - the solution for my problem?

    hi,

i want to do 2 things:
first, i want to try linux.
second, i want to try it on an old notebook with a damaged windows-xp partion (c), an intact d-partition with files i would like to recover and a broken cd drive.

can i do this with debian live version on a usb stick?
and where can i find a non-nerd-documentation on how to make it work?

    thanks for your answers!!
