How to install Ubuntu on to a External Hard Drive.

I just want to know for reference, but how do you put ubuntu onto a external hard drive? DO you need any special software? Or just install it?

Also, is it possible to split (cant remember the technical term) the hard drive, then install it on one side?

    Thanks in advance!

To install to an external hard drive you just plug it into a computer and run the setup on that computer you can choose that drive as the one to install Ubuntu on.

And to split the drive you use the partition manager.

If you want to break up your hard drive into two or more partitions you need to use a partition manager. The first thing you must do before you start is to back up all your critical data. Just in case. Here's a partition manager that's easy to use and free:

You can easily install most distros on an external hard drive. You really need to be careful in order to make sure that you do not accidently install on your main drive, though.

From a Live Disk, you can run this command to see all the drives and partitions.

    Code:
    fdisk -l
As for partitioning, EaseUS works great in Windows. I have used it several times. However, I prefer to use gparted from a live disk.
