You may want to make sure that you have the latest Ubuntu installed and updated before you do anything. Also, make sure that you consult any other websites if you need help. It'll be worth it in the end.

First and foremost thing to do after installing Ubuntu operating system is to install Restricted Extras. Without installing Restricted Extras one can't get the sound and can't open any image etc. You can install Restricted Extras when Ubuntu is installing for the first time or you can install it by going to Ubuntu Software Center and by typing Restricted Extras in the search box or you can install it by opening the terminal and typing the following command "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras".
