Discussion thread for the popular lightweight distro, CrunchBang Linux. It's Ubuntu based, using OpenBox, so you get a really minimal desktop with low system resource usage.

I am actually more interested in learning about the size and performance of the distro as opposed to the desktop artworks associated. As stated in another thread, I will be trying an embedded project on the Raspberry Pi and want to understand how lightweight I can go to be able to have the most resources available for my application on such a system.

Do you know what sort of resources are required for this distro? I looked on the site and unfortunately did not see anything about the resources on which the system runs.

I'm sorry but I don't know it neither.. I think you can find something even more lightweight, maybe the real experts will tell you what to do All I can say is that it seems really fast even on older computers, and as I know it's based on a minimal Ubuntu install.

A few of my friends use it and they say it's awesome. I have yet to take the plunge and download it however, I don't feel like partitioning my hard drives right now And no, I can't run it in a VM, my computer's too slow for that.

Going to try this someday, it's on my list.

I'm glad to hear that Currently I don't have this distro on my computer, but as soon as I get my new config (by next week) I'll install it again... Ever since I tried it I miss it.

I have yet to venture into CrunchBang land. I have been interested in this distro for quite some time now, but I feel it is not something that will truly hold my interest. I have done quite a bit of research and have seen that customization is one of the greatest features of CrunchBang. It appears that CrunchBang is a distro that truly allows a user to do any and all customization that please them - you can do sleek, minimal themes or more complex, visually stunning aspects as well.

It's great to see there are some users of this distro here on the forums. I am eager to see if any further discussion will occur - who knows, someone may convince me to give it a try!

CrunchBang uses OpenBox which is a very, VERY lightweight environment. Having said that, I can run it fine on an old machine with the following specs:

720 MB DDR1 (yeaup, not even DDR2)
1.6 (or 1.8) GHz single-core AMD Athlon processor (3800+)
On-board graphics

So, basically unless your computer can handle only up to Windows 3.1, you're pretty set.

The last time I tested CrunchBang, I foresaw a bright future for this young distro. CrunchBang did have a future, but in the transition to becoming a Debian-based rolling edition, something got lost.I feel the distro has taken a turn for the worse. It strives for that long-term goal of hassle-free computing, and that sounds great, but to get there, you must sweat and then sweat some more.
