I wouldn't mind seeing a backup script that would back up specified directories to say amazon cloud or google cloud? each backup would go into a bucket for the day, and i could set how many backups a day would need to go into it.

Amazon has an API for their cloud servers so it might be easy enough. I don't mess with the cloud much so I'm not sure. However, you could also use Google Drive (a.k.a.: Google Cloud) in the same fashion as DropBox I assume.

This is a really good tutorial, particularly for me who doesn't know too much as a relatively new Linux (Ubuntu) user.
