I would only open ports I need if it's a personal website, but for larger websites it would probably cause problems in the future

I've not used a VPN client on Linux before, only VNC, but I would expect OpenVPN is the best way to go. I am sure there are tutorials around if you search the internet!
-
That's a good tutorial for Linux newbies, and I am sure they will find it helpful. Well done! :)

Which web server do you use?
Usually, I use Apache, but for low RAM environments, I use nginx which are both easy to manage!
-
Which firewall do you use?
Personally, I use ConfigServer Firewall as it has a good range of options and is easy to manage

That probably means that something has been added on that line that shouldn't be there, or there is a variable that is wrong. I would check the PHP docs and see if you can find anything that is wrong...
-
That probably means that the URL of the sources is down or has been deleted. That is what that error would mean usually anyway.
-
I would use Ubuntu netbook edition as it will be more low end. It would probably support the normal version actually, so you could try that. Another one you could try would be Linux Mint, which I...

This has happened to me before and I had to re-install the Operating System in order to resolve it. I am not sure what caused it though

I've never used Fedora, but it looks like a good Operating System to use and I'll probably use it in the future
-
That definitely looks good, and I hope that comes out soon, as it looks like a great OS to have on a phone!! :)

I believe you can dual boot by using Wubi, but I'm not 100% sure. Do a bit of research first and you'll be fine! :)

You should need to edit /etc/hostname although I'm not sure if that would work for you. Sometimes you need to edit the sysconfig network settings I believe.

Most web hosts you will find use CentOS. The reason for this is because cPanel can only run on CentOS and can't run on any other OS like Ubuntu. OpenVZ runs on CentOS too which most providers use for...

I have run and set up a few Minecraft servers. I generally run Minecraft/Bukkit on CentOS, and then use the screen command to make sure that it's running all the time. Make sure you use screen...

Personally, unless it's been done for me, I do a yum update straight away to update the kernel etc to the latest versions. Then I install all of the software I want, then firewall (if needed), and...

Personally, I much prefer cloud servers. I currently have one situated in the UK and it's so much faster than any other server I've had. I like the way they're set out, where if one goes down, you're...

If you're a first time user to Linux I would suggest using Ubuntu, as that for me is personally the best OS that you can use. It has lots of features too.
-
It depends what OS you are using as the commands will be different. Take a look on the internet and I'm sure you'll find something!
-
I believe my provider charges £1 per month for Additional IP's. It might be more, as I know there is a shortage of IPv4's at the moment.
-
I would sell them on eBay if you are not going to use them. I would think they would go for quite a bit of money each
-
I much prefer nano. I have tried vi, but can never get on with the close, save etc commands!
-
You would need to install a Gnome desktop to do this, which can be done in Ubuntu, and most others.
-
I don't usually CHMOD via SSH, unless there is a problem. I always use the cPanel file manager, or through an FTP client.
-
Hmm, that's quite strange. Keep trying, it should work. What does it do when you run directly from the disk?
