Download and install Ubuntu linux until you get used to the file system, the packages and package manager(s) and the command line and test out the different desktop interfaces.
Here's one place to look:
Try a newer version: it may be auto-detected and solve the problem immediately (try a live version before installing to be sure!)

If you want barebones in order to learn 'linux', you could try linux from scratch, or slackware which is very close to 'original' linux, or the way linux 'should' be....
