I bought this PC in 2007 mainly for gaming but now I only use it to watch movies and browse the internet. I changed the case, GPU, etc. in the years that have passed since then.

CPU: Intel E8400 @ 3.0 GHz
GPU: msi GTS450 CYCLONE OC
mobo: MSI P35 Neo2-FR
Case: Antec 300
HDD: 640GB WD
RAM: 2x2GB A-Data Extreme Edition

And that's about it, now I want to buy a small netbook or something so I could just do my work, my gaming years have passed.

Just used EVEREST to generate my specs. Missing a couple things. I don't really know the exact model of my PSU and MOBO, but my PSU is 500W. Didn't bother over clocking it either.
Case: Coolermaster CM 690 II Basic ATX Mid Tower Case Black

I'm planning to build my own PC using these specs:

Processor: Intel Core i7
Ram: 8gb
Video Card: I prefer an ATI card but I haven't decided which one because I don't have the funds yet
HDD: 1TB
Monitor: 22"

This will be used for mostly gaming.

Custom built, high performance, software development machine: i7-3930K 6-core processor at 3.2 GHz (boost to 3.8), 18 GB RAM, 4TB hard disk space, Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 2GB GDDR5 GPU, water cooling system, triple monitor setup. I'm also running a highly customized version of Arch Linux on one hard disk and a highly customized version of FreeBSD 8.2 on the other...I don't do Windows for software development; I wrote my own drivers and everything for all my hardware as well.

Let's face it.

Bragging about your prized computer setup is the guilty joy of a Linux user.

I have three computers.

An Inspiron 1405 laptop that runs xubuntu 12.04 32 bit.

A CQ60 laptop that runs xubuntu 12.04 64 bit

And a Custom built Desktop with a Gigabyte Motherboard that runs Ubuntu Studio 12.04 64 bit.

There is no shame in being proud of your gear. :p

Right now my main machine is a Hannspree SN12E2 sub-notebook. The specs are close to the same as the first build of Alienware's smallest notebooks, the M11x, only without dedicated video memory, with only the onboard Intel 4500MHD to power it.

12.1" 1366x768 screen
Intel Pentium Dual Core SU7300 (1.30Ghz, ULV)
4GB DDR3-1066 RAM (upgraded from DOA stock 2GB)
320GB 7200RPM Hitachi HDD (upgraded from 320GB 5400RPM WD)
3x USB 2.0, 1x HDMI-out, 1x VGA-out, SD Reader, integrated Bluetooth 2.1+EDR

Not enough power to do any real gaming, but it runs the Torchlight II beta just fine, and with some tweaking I can milk 30+ FPS out of it in Team Fortress 2.

Your custom built pc is really a good one, I don't think you need to improve parts for another 2 years or so :$...

I am using a Hp probook 4530 for home and work and a macbook pro for home. The probook has better specs than the macbook pro. Both have had their share of small issues but both have been reliable enough for me.

The 550 was released in 2008, you stated you have yours for about 3 years. The probook 4530 has came out in 2011 and has only been around for about 10 months.

I didn't mention it earlier on, but in addition to my laptop, I've also got a fairly low-end gaming desktop. The shell and some other bits are from an HP that was originally designed as a Vista Business machine, but over the last three years or so I've modded it to the point that most of the original hardware's gone.
